Mighty Pens is delighted to announce a new drawing competition is association with new Mighty Pens children’s book release Pearl Pavlova! Step into the ballet shoes of Pearl Pavlova, a gifted young mouse with a love of
dance. Join Pearl and her friends as her passion takes her from Russia’s
Mariinsky Theatre to the glitzy London home of the Sadlers Wells Ballet! Yet
behind the talent lies a hidden heartbreak. Can Pearl’s father Niki be saved from
King Rat Rostislav’s evil clutches before it’s too late? A thrilling tale that will leave
you en pointe!

The Challenge!

Are you a young artist with a talent for painting or drawing? Perhaps you’ve never tried drawing before or maybe you’ve already drawn many pictures. Why not enter today with the written permission of your parent or guardian? Mighty Pens are delighted to judge this new young illustrators competition!

Mighty Pens in association with Pearl Pavlova’s author and illustrator would like you to imagine a new friend for Pearl in her upcoming adventures! Perhaps your character is male or female, old or young. However you imagine your character, don’t forget to capture them with your pencil or paintbrush. Does your character have a name or any likes and dislikes? Don’t forget to include that too! Let your imagination run wild!

Author Annie Day Fernie has always had a passion for dance. Her youth was spent in ballet
class, rehearsal and enjoying the magical world of performance. With experience as a teacher,
Annie is always looking for new ways to engage young talent in the magnificent world of ballet
and was inspired to write the story of Pearl, the young mouse who just couldn’t sit still in her
imagination. Annie is currently capturing more of Pearl’s latest adventures in her upcoming
stories and can’t wait to find inspiration from the winning illustration for her next book!

A talented graphic designer and artist, illustrator Lizzie Birney is no stranger to the world of
performance and it was her friendship and role as a long standing musician in Annie’s ballet
class that inspired and fired an exciting partnership that would ultimately bring Pearl to life and
into the spotlight.

The Pearl Pavlova Young Illustrators Award is open to anyone younger than 14 and living in the British Isles. There will be two categories, the Oysters and the Pearls – the Oyster category will be open for anyone between the ages of 4-7 and the Pearl category will be open to anyone between the ages of 8-14.

One winner from each category will have their illustrated character included as part of Pearl Pavlova’s new adventure and two runners up, along with the winner, from each category will also have their illustrations win their way to Pearl’s illustrious gallery in Annie Day Fernie’s next book as well as a Pearl Pavlova goodie bag!

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your pencils and paintbox and start drawing – who knows, your illustration might well win this national young illustrators award and your character may well find themselves adventuring with Pearl Pavlova herself!

  • Entries should be sent to and clearly marked Pearl Pavlova Young Illustrators Award

  • Parents or guardians must make the entry for those wishing to enter and please state either the Oyster or Pearl age category

  • The closing date is September 30th at 11:59. There will be one winner from each category as well as two runners up per category selected by the Mighty Pens panel in Pearl Pavlova’s author and illustrator.

  • There is one entry per person and it must be the exclusive work of the illustrator

  • Although Mighty Pens celebrates individual interpretation of the theme, no offensive, degrading, abusive or hurtful language, humour or inference will be tolerated. Entries that do contain such will be disqualified

  • Entries must not have been published or appeared anywhere else, including any placement in another competition

  • The judges’ decision is final and no discussion will be entered into

  • We are more than happy to receive photographs of the entrants’ artwork. Entries may be hand drawn, painted or via any other medium that is considered art. A name for the character depicted is encouraged though not vital. Please feel free to write a short bio about the character.

  • Any person or persons affiliated with Mighty Pens and their partners are excluded from entry into this competition

  • Copyright remains with the author but Mighty Pens will have automatic permission rights to use winning material for promotional or editorial purposes
